Why does path of exile take so long to update

Written by Joseph Russell — 0 Views

It essentially creates a copy of all files that will be modified, patches the copied version, then moves them into the main directory. This means that for games like Path of Exile or Payday 2, which keep the vast majority of the game’s data in one file, it seems like it just sits there forever as it’s copying everything on your slow HDD.

You aren’t redownloading the whole game, but the game itself is using the existing files, copying them somewhere in some archived format (which is why you may see your harddrive space drop~25gb), updating this new archived copy of it, verifying it is all good, then installing it correctly and ready to be playable.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the “checking for resources” part takes a long time to finish, that’s because you don’t have an SSD. I just upgraded to an SSD a month ago and I’ve had no problems with patch times since, but on my HDD it was the slowest conpared to all of my other games.

Each update takes on average 10-15 minutes to update and install. Sometimes a bit less. But most times more than 10 minutes. I have a 18mb download and the updates cannot be that big that it takes all this time to download.

I now start game, go to window mode – surf the net until I hear the character select music. Some days it’s really fast, other days it takes ages. The game needs to preload most of the assets y’know. take back my time of 15 seconds…just did a few tests, turned pc on off loaded poe and loaded again a few times…

First of all, make sure you turn off your Firewall settings. If you can’t do so, then do make sure to add Path of Exile in the list of exceptions to the Firewall. The reason why this is being emphasized is that in many cases Windows Firewall constantly prevents Path of Exile from communicating over the internet which creates huge ping spikes and delay.

Path of Exile really takes it out of you when it comes to planning and strategizing. Developed and published by Grinding Gear Games in 2013. Since the launch, lead developer Chris Wilson and his team have been working hard on the game to make it what it is today, a true masterpiece for anyone who played Diablo 2, which the game itself was inspired by.

I have experienced the same issue, updates taking upwards of 3 hours with the download taking about 20-30 minutes on a barely used 200MB fiber line. The worst part is that the display provides no real indication of what is happening, it gets to about 40% complete and just sits there for hours on end.

If you look at the game files, you’ll see one gigantic file taking up most space. To update, it has to be unpacked, updated and re-packed. Steam now displays harddrive activity in the client’s downloads section to adress people’s confusion about this, so have an eye on that next time. You’ll see your hardrive working hard.
